A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
the month of February, 2010, as NAACP Month; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the NAACP, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, is the
oldest civil rights organization in the United States and is dedicated to equal
rights for all citizens of this nation, especially persons of color;
and
WHEREAS,
as of February, 2010, the NAACP has served as the gold standard for advocacy of
equal political, educational, social, and economic rights for all individuals
for 101 years; and
WHEREAS,
many prominent individuals with Georgia roots have been involved in the
conception, founding, and directing of the NAACP, including W.E.B. DuBois,
Walter White, James Weldon Johnson, A.F. Herndon, and the current national
chairman Julian Bond; and
WHEREAS,
the Atlanta and Georgia branches of the NAACP are launching a Special Membership
Campaign on February 1, 2010, to enroll thousands of new and renewing members of
the organization; and
WHEREAS,
the City of Atlanta and the State of Georgia are aware that the entire state
benefits from the rights of all its citizens being protected and advanced;
and
WHEREAS,
it is fitting that this body express its appreciation for the great advancements
made by the NAACP over the past 100 years.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend the NAACP for the organization's significant role in leading
social change in America and recognize February, 2010, as NAACP
Month.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to members of the
press and the public.
