A RESOLUTION


Honoring and celebrating the 114th birthday of Dr. Leila Denmark; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. Leila Denmark was born on February 1, 1898, in Bulloch County, a beloved daughter to Elerbee and Alice Cornelia Hendricks Daughtry and the third of 12 children; and

WHEREAS, she was united in love and marriage to the late John Eustace Denmark and was blessed with one remarkable daughter, Mary Alice Denmark Hutcherson, two wonderful grandsons, John Stevenson Hutcherson and James Daughtry Hutcherson, and two adored great-grandchildren, Jacob Amaziah Hutcherson and Hayden Kathryn Hutcherson; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Denmark was the third woman to graduate from the Medical College of Georgia in 1928, and she worked as a pediatrician until her retirement in 2001; and

WHEREAS, she is the author of Every Child Should Have a Chance, published in 1971 and currently in its 12th printing; and

WHEREAS, over the years she has been honored with awards, including the Fisher Award in 1935 for outstanding research into the diagnosis, treatment, and immunization of whooping cough, and was selected as Atlanta's Woman of the Year in 1953; and

WHEREAS, a woman with a strong sense of family allegiance and an unyielding desire to help those in need, Dr. Denmark personifies dedication, intelligence, and a strong work ethic and serves as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, she has given inspiration to many through her high ideals, morals, and deep concern for her fellow citizens and she possesses the vast wisdom which only comes through experience and the strength of character which is achieved through overcoming the many challenges of life; and

WHEREAS, she is a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness, and by the example she has made of her life, she makes this world a better place in which to live, and it is only fitting and proper that she be appropriately recognized during this very special and memorable time of her life.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize Dr. Leila Denmark for her outstanding service to her patients and the State of Georgia, commend her on the occasion of her 114th birthday, and wish her many more years of happiness.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Leila Denmark.
