A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Ms. Rita A. Sheffey; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Ms. Rita A. Sheffey has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for
the vital role that she has played in the legal community and her deep personal
commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia; and
WHEREAS,
a partner at Hunton & Williams, LLP, Ms. Sheffey was honored by Emory
University School of Law with an Unsung Devotion to Those Most in Need Award
from the Emory Public Interest Committee (EPIC) at the 2010 Inspiration Awards
Ceremony and Reception; and
WHEREAS,
founded in 1988, EPIC promotes awareness and increases understanding of public
interest law, encourages and facilitates the employment of Emory students in
public interest legal positions, and raises money to provide grants to students
so that they may work with public interest programs during the summer;
and
WHEREAS,
Ms. Sheffey's leadership and guidance have been instrumental to the Atlanta Bar
Association, an organization with which she has served as secretary, chairperson
of the Celebrating Service Committee, cochairperson of the Pro Bono Committee
and the One Child One Lawyer Pro Bono Program, and as a member of the Board of
Directors and Executive Committee; and
WHEREAS,
she has diligently and selflessly devoted her time, talents, and energy to
helping others through her work as a member of the Supreme Court of Georgia's
Equal Justice Commission Committee on Civil Justice, and as past president of
the Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc., and the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers
Foundation, Inc.; and
WHEREAS,
Ms. Sheffey has dedicated over two decades to the field of law and public
service which has been recognized by the legal community with such awards as an
Outstanding Woman in the Profession Achievement Award from the Atlanta Bar
Association Women in the Profession Section, a 2004 H. Sol Clark Pro Bono Award
from the State Bar of Georgia, and an E. Randolph Williams Award for Outstanding
Pro Bono Service; and
WHEREAS,
she stands as president and chairperson of Atlanta Victim Assistance, Inc., and
serves on the Board of Trustees for Boys Speak Out, Inc.; and
WHEREAS,
the honorable deeds and selfless actions of this distinguished Georgian serve as
a shining example of volunteerism, and the State of Georgia is honored and
blessed to have Ms. Sheffey as a citizen.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Ms. Rita A. Sheffey on her volunteer efforts and
contributions, extend to her their most sincere gratitude for her decades of
efficient, effective, unselfish, and dedicated service, and congratulate her
upon her most recent honor of an Unsung Devotion to Those Most in Need Award
from Emory University School of Law's Emory Public Interest
Committee.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Ms. Rita A.
Sheffey.
