A RESOLUTION


Commending Georgia State University, recognizing February 2, 2012, as Georgia State University Day at the state capitol, and inviting President Mark Becker, his wife Laura Voisinet, Coach Bill Curry, Athletic Director Cheryl Levick, and Senior Advisor to the President Tom Lewis to be recognized by the House of Representatives; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Georgia State University was founded in 1913 with an inaugural class of 48 students and will celebrate its centennial in 2013; and

WHEREAS, Georgia State University is a leading urban research university focused on research, service, and providing advanced educational opportunities to more than 32,000 students; and

WHEREAS, Georgia State students and faculty form the foundation of a vibrant, dynamic, and culturally diverse campus in the heart of Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, Georgia State students and graduates demonstrate exemplary skills in leadership, academics, and athletics which contribute to this state and the local economy by creating a globally competitive base of talent for research and for civic and economic leadership; and

WHEREAS, this body includes 16 members who have graduated from this fine institution; and

WHEREAS, Georgia State University is nationally recognized in the areas of business, law, and the sciences; and

WHEREAS, President Mark Becker has set a new standard for growth and excellence through expanding the research infrastructure, targeted faculty hiring, the establishment of an Honors College, and focused efforts on community and international partnerships; and

WHEREAS, the state-of-the-art Petit Science Center houses life sciences research facilities including the Center for Inflammation, Immunity, and Infection; the Center for Diagnosis and Therapeutics; and one of the largest Visual Walls that aids in instruction and research; and

WHEREAS, Georgia State University student-athletes excel in the classroom, posting a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher for seven consecutive semesters; and

WHEREAS, Georgia State University Athletic Department continues to strengthen and expand its program with the addition of men's football conference participation; and

WHEREAS, new head men's basketball Coach Ron Hunter has led the team to its best record since 2001, including a school record 11 game winning streak; and

WHEREAS, the president, students, faculty, and alumni of this fine institution are welcomed to the Gold Dome for Georgia State University Day at the state capitol.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Georgia State University on 99 years of providing exemplary education, recognize February 2, 2012, as Georgia State University Day at the state capitol, and invite President Mark Becker, his wife Laura Voisinet, Coach Bill Curry, Athletic Director Cheryl Levick, and Senior Advisor to the President Tom Lewis to be recognized by the House of Representatives at a date and time designated by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Georgia State University Student Government Association.
