A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Dr. Eugene M. Bishop; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Dr. Eugene M. Bishop on March 23, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bishop was born in Atlanta, Georgia, a beloved son of the late George and Gussie Bishop; and

WHEREAS, he was educated in the Atlanta public schools and served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bishop was the retired owner and president of Health Services Centers, Inc., a multifacility corporation that was established in 1970 and owned long-term health care facilities, acute care hospitals, and pharmacies; and

WHEREAS, he was active in both state and national health care trade associations, serving as president of the Georgia Health Care Association and regional vice president, first vice president, and two term national president of the American Health Care Association; and

WHEREAS, a staunch and loyal supporter of Georgia Southern University, Dr. Bishop served on the school's board of trustees, was a member of the school's Business Advisory Council for the School of Business, and was a board member and executive committee member of the university's Athletic Foundation; and

WHEREAS, the single largest contributor to the Georgia Southern Athletics Department, Dr. Bishop was responsible for the funding of the Bishop Fieldhouse at Paulson Stadium and was honored by the school with the Southern Conference Distinguished Service Award, a Friend of the University Award, and the Honorary Doctor of Letters; and
WHEREAS, he was the proud father of Gray and Nikki Bishop and Traci and Jay Stillman and drew great joy from his grandchildren, Griffyn and Gavin Bishop; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his children and grandchildren, Dr. Bishop leaves behind many who will cherish his memory, including his niece, Kathleen Guy; his nephew, Gary Bishop; his great-nieces and great-nephews, Abigail Guy, Garrett Guy, and Levi Bishop; and special friend and extended family, Nancy Addison, Drew and Shanna Addison, Trip Addison, and Lindsay Addison; and

WHEREAS, he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern for his fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he demonstrated to his family and friends were admired by others; and

WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Dr. Bishop will long be remembered for his love of family and friendship, and this loyal father, grandfather, uncle, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Dr. Eugene M. Bishop and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Dr. Eugene M. Bishop.
