Florida Senate - 2015 (NP) SR 1634 By Senator Sachs 34-02970-15 20151634__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution commemorating Holocaust Remembrance Day 3 and the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of 4 Auschwitz-Birkenau. 5 6 WHEREAS, on January 27, 2015, world leaders recognized the 7 10th anniversary of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day 8 and the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz 9 Birkenau, paying tribute to the 6 million Jews and the estimated 10 5 million others, including Gypsies, homosexuals, Jehovah’s 11 Witnesses, individuals with disabilities, and members of the 12 resistance, who were slaughtered by the Nazis under the ruthless 13 regime of Adolf Hitler, and 14 WHEREAS, the Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the 15 Holocaust is an annual tribute, designated by the Congress of 16 the United States, to commemorate the Holocaust and is 17 recollected during an 8-day period beginning on the Sunday 18 before the Jewish observance of Yom HaShoah and continuing 19 through the following Sunday, and 20 WHEREAS, in 2015, the Days of Remembrance of the Victims of 21 the Holocaust will be observed from April 12 through 19, with 22 the observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day beginning at sunset 23 on April 15 and ending at sunset on April 16, and 24 WHEREAS, in the words of author and Holocaust survivor 25 Primo Levi, “It happened, therefore it can happen again. . . . 26 It can happen anywhere,” and 27 WHEREAS, we must never forget this dark chapter in human 28 history, and we must recommit to protecting the persecuted, 29 ending genocide in every corner of the world, and securing the 30 value and dignity of each person, NOW, THEREFORE, 31 32 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 33 34 That we commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 70th 35 anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, recognize 36 the scars and burdens carried by those who survived or lost 37 loved ones to the Holocaust, denounce bigotry and hatred 38 wherever it is found, and respect the value and dignity of each 39 person.
