Florida Senate - 2012 SB 1018 By Senator Garcia 40-00856A-12 20121018__ 1 A bill to be entitled 2 An act relating to resident status for tuition 3 purposes; amending s. 1009.21, F.S.; classifying as 4 residents for tuition purposes a United States citizen 5 who attends a Florida high school for at least 2 6 consecutive years and submits his or her high school 7 transcript to and enrolls in an institution of higher 8 education within 12 months after graduating from a 9 Florida high school; requiring the State Board of 10 Education to adopt rules and the Board of Governors of 11 the State University System to adopt regulations; 12 providing an effective date. 13 14 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 15 16 Section 1. Paragraph (l) is added to subsection (10) of 17 section 1009.21, Florida Statutes, and subsection (13) of that 18 section is amended, to read: 19 1009.21 Determination of resident status for tuition 20 purposes.—Students shall be classified as residents or 21 nonresidents for the purpose of assessing tuition in 22 postsecondary educational programs offered by charter technical 23 career centers or career centers operated by school districts, 24 in Florida College System institutions, and in state 25 universities. 26 (10) The following persons shall be classified as residents 27 for tuition purposes: 28 (l) A United States citizen who attends a Florida high 29 school for at least 2 consecutive years and submits his or her 30 high school transcript to and enrolls in an institution of 31 higher education within 12 months after graduating from a 32 Florida high school. 33 (13) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules and the 34 Board of Governors shall adopt regulationsrulesto implement 35 this section. 36 Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a law.
