Florida Senate - 2012 SB 500 By Senator Thrasher 8-00604-12 2012500__ 1 A bill to be entitled 2 An act relating to transportation facility 3 designations; providing honorary designation of a 4 certain transportation facility in a specified county; 5 directing the Department of Transportation to erect 6 suitable markers; providing an effective date. 7 8 WHEREAS, on May 17, 1987, while on maneuvers in the Persian 9 Gulf, the guided-missile frigate USS Stark was fired upon by an 10 Iraqi jet fighter and struck by two antiship missiles, and 11 WHEREAS, 37 United States sailors lost their lives and 12 another 21 sailors were seriously wounded during the unprovoked 13 attack, and 14 WHEREAS, the USS Stark was based in Mayport, and 15 WHEREAS, on May 17, 2012, the anniversary of the missile 16 attack on the USS Stark, Mayport Naval Base will hold a memorial 17 service to honor the men and women who gave their lives while 18 serving their country, NOW, THEREFORE, 19 20 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 21 22 Section 1. USS Stark Memorial Drive designated; Department 23 of Transportation to erect suitable markers.— 24 (1) That portion of State Road 101/Mayport Road between 25 State Road A1A and Wonderwood Connector in Duval County is 26 designated as “USS Stark Memorial Drive.” 27 (2) The Department of Transportation is directed to erect 28 suitable markers designating USS Stark Memorial Drive as 29 described in subsection (1). 30 Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a law.
