WHEREAS, Ben Hylak, a 14-year-old freshman at Wilmington's Salesianum School and a resident of Chester, Pennsylvania, has brought honor and renown upon himself, his school and our region by conceiving, designing and building a remarkable "telepresence robot," which he calls MAYA ("Me and You Anywhere"), designed to help elderly persons communicate; and

WHEREAS, Ben's achievement is all the more noteworthy in that it grew out of adversity in his own life, in the form of a life-threatening illness, during the course of which Ben conceived of the need for his invention and began planning how to create it; and

WHEREAS, throughout his life, he has been driven by an unquenchable desire to know how things work and how to improve upon them; and

WHEREAS, after visiting a national event known as "Maker Faire" in New York, Ben was inspired to build MAYA for his local science fair, assembling it from a variety of inexpensive components, including a Roomba vacuum cleaner, a computer monitor and various other parts at a total cost of less than five hundred dollars; and

WHEREAS, the device enables residents of nursing homes and other health care facilities to communicate with others at remotelocations and is fully mobile, being able to move from place to place, it possesses great potential for multiple uses in the health care environment; and

WHEREAS, after winning honors in his own local science fair with his invention, Ben was invited to be a featured presenter at the 2011 World Maker Faire, winning additional awards there; and

WHEREAS, Ben went to the Broadcom Masters Faire in Washington in October, 2011, where he became the silver medalist, which in turn led to his being chosen by the Society for Science and the Public to represent the Broadcom Masters Program at the Presidential Science Fair at the White House; and

WHEREAS, during his visit to the White House in early February, 2012, Ben was one of only 10 presenters to have their projects set up in the State Dining Room and to be personally interviewed by President Barack Obama, with whom he held a personal conversation; and

WHEREAS, this remarkable young man and his achievements have been a source of great inspiration to everyone, especially other young people, who hears the story of MAYA and what it has led to; and

WHEREAS, Ben and his family are visiting Legislative Hall on this 22nd Day of March, 2012;

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 146th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that the members do hereby extend to Ben Hylak the grateful thanks and commendations of all Delawareans for his hard work and remarkable creative ability in using the inspiration brought by his own serious illness to create an invention designed to help others.
