151st GENERAL ASSEMBLY

HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 99

ACKNOWLEDGING JUNE 2022 AS LGBTQ+ PRIDE MONTH IN DELAWARE.

WHEREAS, June 2022 marks the 53rd anniversary of the Stonewall riots, when members of the LGBTQ+ community courageously stood up against the discrimination and violence perpetrated upon them based on their sexual orientations and gender identities; and

WHEREAS, many of those community members were people of color and non-gender-conforming individuals; and

WHEREAS, the riots sparked the modern American LGBTQ+ civil rights movement and have inspired equality movements around the world; and

WHEREAS, although LGBTQ+ individuals still face discrimination and bigotry, our community has made immense strides since that fateful day in June 28, 1969; and

WHEREAS, LGBTQ+ Delawareans are part of the rich, diverse tapestry of our great state; and

WHEREAS, through individual activism, various organizations, and important legislation, we have made great strides in protecting equal rights for LGBTQ+ Delawareans; and

WHEREAS, in 2021, the Human Rights Campaign reported the highest annual number of hate crimes against LGBTQ+ individuals since the organization began tracking hate crimes;

WHEREAS, a large number of those hate crimes were directed against transgender individuals of color; and

WHEREAS, LGBTQ+ youth have much higher rates of homelessness, mental health and substance abuse issues, self-harm, and suicide than their heterosexual and cisgender counterparts; and

WHEREAS, the LGBTQ+ community acknowledges and thanks its invaluable allies; and

WHEREAS, every June, communities across America and around the world come together to celebrate LGBTQ+ lives and reflect on work still to be done; and

WHEREAS, we recommit to guaranteeing equality and fairness for all LGBTQ+ Delawareans.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of the 151st General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that the State of Delaware acknowledges the month of June 2022 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month.
