HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 28

DECLARING JUNE 2015 DELAWARE DAIRY MONTH AND HONORING DELAWARE'S FARM CREAMERIES AND DAIRY FARMERS.



WHEREAS, June is celebrated as National Dairy Month each year; and

WHEREAS, Milk is the #1 food source of three of four nutrients that the Dietary Guidelines for Americans say adults and children need to consume more of—Vitamin D, Calcium and Potassium; and

WHEREAS, only 13.5 percent of girls and 36.3 percent of boys age 12 to 19 in the United States get the recommended daily amount (RDA) of calcium, placing them at serious risk for osteoporosis and other bone diseases, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Agriculture; and

WHEREAS The National Dairy Council suggests children ages 2 to 5 years old need at least 2 cups of milk and dairy foods per day; and

WHEREAS, over $28 billion worth of milk are produced each year by the U.S. Dairy Industry and the total milk production in Delaware for 2012 was 92 million pounds, up 2% from the previous year; and

WHEREAS, in 1983 the General Assembly designated milk as the official state beverage of Delaware; and

WHEREAS, according to the University of Delaware, milk sales rank fifth in agricultural receipts and at the top in the income of all livestock products except poultry; and

WHEREAS, Delaware Farm Bureau Foundation and the New Castle County Farm Bureau is sponsoring a 5K Milk Run/Walk on May 30th, 2015 at the Appoquinimink High School in Middletown, DE with the proceeds providing milk for underprivileged children serviced through the Ministry of Caring and promoting safe and stable families through the Neighborhood House in Middletown, DE.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 148th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that the month of June 2015 be declared DELAWARE DAIRY MONTH and hereby honors Delaware's farm creameries; Cowgirls Creamery; Daily Dairy Market; Hopkins Farm Creamery; Hy-Point Dairy; UDairy Creamery; Vanderwende Creamery; and Woodside Creamery, as well as the following dairy farmers throughout the state:
