Summary

This Act will allow for a combined special license plate for Disabled American Veterans who are also eligible for a special license plate for persons with disabilities requiring parking accommodations. The Act also adopts the more common and recently recognized standard of certification by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs that an applicant meets the qualifications of being a service-connected Disabled American Veteran. Lastly, it amends current language to be consistent with the presumed passage of House Bill No. 91 that provides for the use of respectful language for those with disabilities. The Act would, for those of our veterans with disabilities who meet the criteria for both, allow the Division of Motor Vehicles to combine the processes of applying for a Disabled American Veteran license plate and applying for a parking placard or plate for persons with disabilities which limit or impair mobility. It will permit the addition of a section on the Disabled American Veteran’s license plate application that allows an applicant qualified for parking accommodation to apply for that accommodation at the same time as the Disabled American Veteran recognition. The result: a license plate that features the Disabled American Veteran designation and the universally-recognized symbol for those requiring special parking accommodations. This inclusion will allow the veteran to park in a person with disability’s space without having to go through the separate application process to receive a rearview mirror hang tag. Not only might this save the State resources, but it will also save our veterans with disabilities from an unnecessary inconvenience.
