AN ACT CONCERNING THE EVALUATION AND TRACKING OF PROSECUTIONS OF CRIMES COMMITTED WITH THE USE OF A FIREARM.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:

Section 1. (NEW) (Effective October 1, 2018) The Connecticut Sentencing Commission established pursuant to section 54-300 of the general statutes shall evaluate and track the outcomes of prosecutions of crimes committed with the use of a firearm, as defined in section 53a-3 of the general statutes. Such evaluation and tracking shall include all cases prosecuted in any part of the years 2012 to 2017, inclusive, and annually thereafter, but need not include any ongoing prosecution. Such evaluation and tracking shall detail crimes committed with the use of a firearm, whether possessed legally or illegally, as well as conviction rates and the penalties and sentences associated with the conviction of persons prosecuted for any such crimes.

(b) Not later than January 1, 2019, and annually thereafter, the commission shall report, in accordance with the provisions of section 11-4a of the general statutes, the results of such evaluation and tracking to the joint standing committee of the General Assembly having cognizance of matters relating to the judiciary.


This act shall take effect as follows and shall amend the following sections:

Statement of Purpose:

To require the Connecticut Sentencing Commission to evaluate and track outcomes resulting from the prosecution of persons charged with committing a crime with a firearm.
