AN ACT CONCERNING THE PENALTIES FOR UNLAWFUL USE OF A MOBILE TELEPHONE OR ELECTRONIC DEVICE WHILE OPERATING A MOTOR VEHICLE.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:

That section 14-296aa of the general statutes, concerning the prohibition against the use of a mobile telephone or other electronic device while operating a motor vehicle, be amended to provide that the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles shall, for a second violation of said section 14-296aa by a person operating a motor vehicle, suspend such person's operator's license for forty-eight hours and, for a third or subsequent violation of said section, suspend such person's operator's license for thirty days.

Statement of Purpose:

To increase the penalties for distracted driving by suspending the operator's license of repeat offenders.
