AN ACT CONCERNING CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR FIREFIGHTER APPLICATIONS.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:
Section 1. (NEW) (Effective October 1, 2011) Notwithstanding the provisions of section 29-17a of the general statutes, the organized police department of any city, town or borough may perform the criminal history records check required for any person applying to be a firefighter using the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).
This act shall take effect as follows and shall amend the following sections: | ||

Statement of Purpose:
To allow local police departments to perform the criminal background checks for firefighter applications in lieu of requiring the Department of Public Safety to perform the background check.
