Existing law establishes in the Transportation Agency the Department of Motor Vehicles, which is under the control of a civil executive officer known as the Director of Motor Vehicles, and sets forth the powers and duties of the department, including, but not limited to, vehicle registration and the issuance and renewal of driver’s licenses.

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:
SECTION 1.
Chapter 6 (commencing with Section 12897) is added to Part 2.5 of Division 3 of Title 2 of the Government Code, to read:CHAPTER 6. Artificial Intelligence
12897.
(a) The Director of Technology shall devise a strategic plan(a)The Director of Motor Vehicles shall devise a strategic plan that encompasses each unit within the Department of Motor Vehicles to utilize artificial intelligence technology to improve state services. The strategic plan shall evaluate both of the following:
(1)The potential effects of utilizing artificial intelligence to improve state services on the job responsibilities of department employees.
(2)How to minimize the impacts of utilizing artificial intelligence to improve state services on the department’s workforce and job classifications.
(b)In devising
a strategic plan required by subdivision (a), the director may seek input from each unit within the department and from experts in the field of artificial intelligence technology.
