BILL NUMBER: ACR 60 CHAPTERED BILL TEXT RESOLUTION CHAPTER 68 FILED WITH SECRETARY OF STATE JULY 13, 2009 ADOPTED IN SENATE JUNE 29, 2009 ADOPTED IN ASSEMBLY JULY 6, 2009 AMENDED IN SENATE JUNE 11, 2009 INTRODUCED BY Assembly Member Gilmore APRIL 13, 2009 Relative to the Larry Stanley Pierce Memorial Highway. LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST ACR 60, Gilmore. The Medal of Honor Recipient Larry Stanley Pierce Memorial Highway. This measure would designate a specified portion of State Highway Route 46 as the Medal of Honor Recipient Larry Stanley Pierce Memorial Highway. The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost for appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs. WHEREAS, Larry Stanley Pierce was born on July 6, 1941, in Wewoka, Oklahoma; and WHEREAS, In 1958, Larry Stanley Pierce enlisted in the United States Army, where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant and served in the 1st Battalion of the 173rd Airborne Brigade; and WHEREAS, Larry Stanley Pierce served his country in the Republic of Vietnam during the Vietnam War and was assigned as a squad leader in charge of a reconnaissance platoon; and WHEREAS, On September 20, 1965, Larry Stanley Pierce and his platoon were ambushed by hostile forces with machinegun fire; and WHEREAS, Larry Stanley Pierce and his platoon routed the ambushing force and gave chase in order to further suppress the attacking enemy; and WHEREAS, Larry Stanley Pierce discovered an antipersonnel mine that could have destroyed his entire squad. He used his own body to absorb the blast from the mine, saving the lives of 29 of his soldiers; and WHEREAS, Larry Stanley Pierce was laid to rest at the Wasco Memorial Park in the City of Wasco, California; and WHEREAS, President Lyndon B. Johnson posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor to Larry Stanley Pierce's wife, Verlin, his daughter, Teresa, and his sons, Kelley and Gregory, on February 14, 1966; and WHEREAS, The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government. It is awarded to a member of the United States Armed Forces who distinguishes himself or herself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his or her life above and beyond the call of duty while in engaged in an action against the enemy of the United States; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the portion of State Highway Route 46 within the city limits of the City of Wasco as the Medal of Honor Recipient Larry Stanley Pierce Memorial Highway; and be it further Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover that cost, to erect those signs; and be it further Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Department of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
