Relative to the Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Thomas H.
Pohlman Memorial Interchange.

	LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST

ACR 121, Gomez. Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Thomas H.
Pohlman Memorial Interchange.
This measure would designate the interchange at Interstate 10 and
Interstate 710 in the County of Los Angeles as the Los Angeles County
Deputy Sheriff Thomas H. Pohlman Memorial Interchange. The measure
would request that the Department of Transportation determine the
cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon
receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, erect
those signs.

WHEREAS, Thomas H. Pohlman was a sheriff's deputy with the Los
Angeles County Sheriff's Department; and
WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Pohlman was born on July 8, 1950, and was
appointed as a sheriff's deputy on May 29, 1973; and
WHEREAS, On April 19, 1978, Deputy Sheriff Pohlman was on patrol
when he smelled ether, used in the manufacture of the drug PCP,
coming from a nearby house. As Deputy Sheriff Pohlman and his partner
approached the house, a man bolted from the home. Deputy Sheriff
Pohlman pursued the suspect on foot, while his partner went back to
the squad car to radio for assistance. Deputy Sheriff Pohlman caught
the suspect, and, while the suspect was being handcuffed, the suspect
gained control of Deputy Sheriff Pohlman's revolver and shot him.
Deputy Sheriff Pohlman died at the scene; and
WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Pohlman honorably served with the
department and bravely gave his life in the service of his community;
and
WHEREAS, In recognition of Deputy Sheriff Pohlman's commitment and
sacrifice while serving and protecting the residents of the County
of Los Angeles, it is a fitting tribute to designate the interchange
at Interstate 10 and Interstate 710 in the County of Los Angeles as
the Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Thomas H. Pohlman Memorial
Interchange; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the
interchange at Interstate 10 and Interstate 710 in the County of Los
Angeles as the Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Thomas H. Pohlman
Memorial Interchange; and be it further
Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to
determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the signing
requirements for the state highway system showing this special
designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources
sufficient to cover that cost, to erect those signs; and be it
further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of
this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
for appropriate distribution.
