A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

honoring native americans who have served in the united states military.

(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)

Whereas, in our nation's history, millions of men and women have bravely served in the United States armed forces during times of both peace and war.  In so doing, they have sacrificed their time and dreams and often their health or lives to preserve our liberties and freedom; and

Whereas, members of Arizona's tribal nations have served in our nation's military in disproportionately higher numbers, and these individuals, both past and present, have shown extraordinary dedication to preserving the freedoms we enjoy and upholding the lofty principles on which this great nation was founded; and

Whereas, there are currently approximately 20,000 Native American veterans residing in the State of Arizona, including 12,000 Navajo, 5,000 Hopi, 1,000 Apache, 1,000 Tohono O'odham and 1,000 from the remaining tribal nations in the state; and

Whereas, many veterans who return from combat and readjust to life in our country are in need of services and assistance to make the transition back to civilian life, and they are deserving of the praise and support of all citizens in light of their courageous service on behalf of our nation; and

Whereas, America's veterans, both living and deceased, have fought gallantly for the rights and freedom that so many take for granted.  This state and nation owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to all veterans, including Arizona's many Native American veterans; and

Whereas, projects such as the veterans' home in Chinle, the Navajo Code Talkers museum and veterans complex and the veterans' cemeteries in Round Rock and on the Pascua Yaqui reservation are fitting tributes to Native Americans who have fought valiantly to protect this nation and who have sacrificed much so that America could remain great.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the Members of the Legislature pay tribute to the Native American veterans who have served in the United States armed forces for their exceptional service, patriotism and courage.
