A RESOLUTION

recognizing autism research and support organizations in arizona.

(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)

Whereas, autism is a neural developmental disorder that affects how information is processed in the brain.  Symptoms first appear in infancy or early childhood, typically before a child reaches the age of three; and

Whereas, symptoms of autism vary greatly from person to person, but are generally characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, restricted interests and repetitive behavior; and

Whereas, approximately one in 88 children nationwide has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, a tenfold increase over the past forty years; and

Whereas, although there is no known cure, it has been shown that early behavioral and cognitive intervention can help children with autism develop skills in communication, social interactions and self care; and

Whereas, organizations such as the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center have provided support and resources to individuals with autism and their families and advanced research to learn more about this condition.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of Arizona:

That the Members of the House of Representatives recognize the worthwhile organizations in this state, including the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center, that are dedicated to providing support to people affected by autism and to advancing research efforts regarding autism spectrum disorder.
