HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 2002

A CONCURRENT Resolution

Declaring the need to protect the integrity and independence of the UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT.

(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)

Whereas, an independent United States Supreme Court is an essential element of America's system of checks and balances that protects our constitutional rights; and

Whereas, the United States Supreme Court has been composed of nine justices for more than 150 years; and

Whereas, the executive and legislative branches should be prohibited from undermining the integrity and independence of the United States Supreme Court by altering the number of justices on the court.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of Arizona, the Senate concurring:

1. That the Members of the Legislature support an amendment to the Constitution of the United States, as follows:  The Supreme Court of the United States shall be composed of nine justices.

2. That the Secretary of State of the State of Arizona transmit a copy of this Resolution to the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, each Member of Congress from the State of Arizona and each Speaker of the House of Representatives and each President of the Senate of the other state legislatures.
