AN ACT

establishing The joint study committee on teacher shortages.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:

Section 1. Joint study committee on teacher shortages; membership; duties; report; delayed repeal

A. The joint study committee on teacher shortages is established consisting of the following members:

1. The chairperson of the education committee of the senate, who serves as cochairperson of the committee.

2. Two additional members of the senate who are members of different political parties and who are appointed by the president of the senate.

3. The chairperson of the education committee of the house of representatives, who serves as cochairperson of the committee.

4. Two additional members of the house of representatives who are members of different political parties and who are appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives.

5. One member of an association composed of school district governing board members who is appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives.

6. Two representatives of the business community, one of whom is appointed by the president of the senate and one of whom is appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives.

7. One superintendent of a school district who is appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives.

8. One county school superintendent who is appointed by the president of the senate.

9. One school business official who is appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives.

10. One representative of a provider of a teacher preparation program who is appointed by the president of the senate.

11. One public schoolteacher who is appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives.

B. The committee shall:

1. Study the causes and impacts of the teacher shortage in this state.

2. Develop strategies to reduce and eliminate the teacher shortage in this state.

C. On or before December 15, 2017, the committee shall submit a report regarding its findings and recommendations to the governor, the president of the senate and the speaker of the house of representatives and shall provide a copy of this report to the secretary of state.

D. This section is repealed from and after December 31, 2017.
