AN ACT

 

amending Title 15, chapter 14, article 1, Arizona Revised Statutes, by adding section 15-1810; relating to UNIVERSITIES and community colleges.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:

Section 1.  Title 15, chapter 14, article 1, Arizona Revised Statutes, is amended by adding section 15-1810, to read:

START_STATUTE15-1810.  Tuition waivers; rural school district employees; definitions

A.  The Arizona board of regents shall provide to a person who is employed at a rural school district in this state a tuition waiver to enroll in online courses at any university under the jurisdiction of the Arizona board of regents if the person meets either of the following conditions:

1.  Has an associate degree and wishes to enroll in courses to obtain a bachelor's degree in education.

2.  Is a certificated teacher or a certificated administrator and wishes to obtain a graduate degree that is related to that person's current employment or to enroll in advanced education courses that are related to that person's current employment.

B.  Each community college district shall provide a tuition waiver at any community college in that community college district to a person who is a classified employee of a rural school district in this state, who has not previously earned an associate degree or a bachelor's degree and who wishes to obtain an associate degree.  A tuition waiver provided pursuant to this subsection shall entitle the recipient to attend only classes with unused capacity to accommodate that student.

C.  A person who is provided a tuition waiver pursuant to this section must meet the acceptance requirements for admission and enrollment in a degree program at a university under the jurisdiction of the Arizona board of regents or a community college under the jurisdiction of a community college district.  The person must demonstrate continuous progress toward a degree in order to remain eligible for a tuition waiver pursuant to this section.

D.  A person who is provided a tuition waiver pursuant to this section shall remain in good academic standing with the policies established by the university or community college at which the person is enrolled in order to remain eligible for a tuition waiver pursuant to this section.

E.  For the purposes of this section:

1.  "Rural school district" means any school district in this state with a student count of three thousand or less.

2.  "Tuition" means tuition and mandatory fees charged by the university or community college. END_STATUTE
