WHEREAS, Dorothy Seal Tolbert of Newport News, who had an active and fulfilling life in the workplace and as a community volunteer, and who was a lifelong learner, a woman of faith known for her kindness and lovely smile, and a devoted wife and mother, died on January 24, 2015; and WHEREAS, Dorothy Tolbert, who was known to her friends and family as Dot, was born in Norge and graduated from Toano High School; she attended business college before becoming an employee of C&P Telephone Company-Bell Atlantic; and WHEREAS, Dot Tolbert served for two years in the United States Armed Forces as a medical and surgical technician in the Army Medical Corps; she met her husband at Fort Eustis; and WHEREAS, after her military service, Dot Tolbert returned to the telephone company, which is now known as Verizon, where she enjoyed a lengthy and rewarding career for 35 years, retiring as a business system designer engineer; and WHEREAS, continuing her education, Dot Tolbert attended The College of William and Mary, Virginia Wesleyan College, and Christopher Newport University, earning a business diploma; she was a member of the LifeLong Learning Society at Christopher Newport University; and WHEREAS, Dot Tolbert generously gave of her time and talents as a volunteer for many local organizations, including the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life; she was a 25-year volunteer at Riverside Regional Medical Center and was a member of the Red Hat Society; and WHEREAS, other organizations that benefited from Dot Tolbert's leadership included the Woman's Club of Newport News, where she was a member for 26 years and served as club president for three years, and the volunteer auxiliary of Riverside Regional Medical Center, where she was president; and WHEREAS, Dot Tolbert was active in local politics and belonged to the Newport News Republican City Committee; she was a member of the Virginia Peninsula Unit of Parliamentarians; and WHEREAS, for more than 50 years, Dot Tolbert belonged to the Verizon Peninsula TelecomPioneers and served as an officer and as a board member; she greatly contributed to many other local civic organizations; and WHEREAS, Dot Tolbert's many friends remember her kindness and generosity—especially her warm smile; she was a woman of faith and belonged to Temple Baptist Church for 58 years, where she taught Sunday School; and WHEREAS, Dot Tolbert will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her husband, T. P. "Bob" Tolbert; her son, Robert, and his family; and by many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Dorothy Seal Tolbert of Newport News, who was a dedicated employee of C&P Telephone Company-Bell Atlantic, an active community volunteer, a lifelong learner, a woman of faith who was known for her kindness and lovely smile, and a devoted wife and mother; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dorothy Seal Tolbert as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for her memory. |
