SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 59
Commending Castlewood High School.
 
Agreed to by the Senate, January 15, 2015
 

WHEREAS, Castlewood High School won $100,000 in the 2014 Celebrate My Drive safe-driving contest for teen drivers; the signature accomplishment makes the school in Russell County one of 10 high schools nationwide to achieve the honor; and

WHEREAS, to receive the highest recognition in the contest, which is sponsored by State Farm, the students at Castlewood High School had to get as many teenagers as possible older than 14 to commit to being safe drivers; and

WHEREAS, State Farm sponsors the Celebrate My Drive driver safety initiative, which encourages students to develop safe driving habits by using an upbeat and positive message to newly minted drivers; 2014 is the second year that Castlewood High School has won an award; and

WHEREAS, one way that Celebrate My Drive promotes good driving habits is with its 2N2 message to new drivers: keep two eyes on the road and two hands on the wheel, both of which will help teenage drivers avoid being distracted and build confidence; and

WHEREAS, more than 3,000 schools participated in Celebrate My Drive in 2014; Castlewood High School was one of five educational institutions in the small school category to win $100,000; in 2013, the high school won a $25,000 award; and

WHEREAS, students at Castlewood High School have earmarked part of the 2014 prize money to create an outdoor classroom and lunch pavilion; a committee of students will decide on other worthwhile projects while reserving 10 percent of the funds for a teen driver safety program; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Castlewood High School hereby be commended for being named one of 10 national winners of $100,000 in the 2014 Celebrate My Drive contest for teen drivers; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Nathan Breeding, principal of Castlewood High School, as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration and congratulations for the school's efforts to raise awareness and promote safe driving habits among the Commonwealth's youngest drivers.
