SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 130
Commending Ona Estelle Shrader Smith.
 
Agreed to by the Senate, February 27, 2015
 

WHEREAS, Ona Estelle Shrader Smith, a vibrant and hardworking member of the Roanoke community, celebrated her 100th birthday in 2015; and

WHEREAS, a native of West Virginia, Ona Shrader was born on January 8, 1915, to John Patton Shrader and Alberta Mildred Criggs Shrader; and

WHEREAS, Ona Shrader married Elmer E. Smith in 1933, and the couple proudly raised two daughters and one son; they have eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, during World War II, Ona Smith served the war effort by working at the Rainbow Bakery; and

WHEREAS, later in life, Ona Smith served the youth of the community as a cafeteria worker for Roanoke City Public Schools; possessed of a passion for cooking, she always provided a delicious meal for her family; and

WHEREAS, Ona Smith currently lives at The Village on Pheasant Ridge, where she helps new residents with orientation and uses her bright smile and quick wit to spread joy to everyone she meets; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Ona Estelle Shrader Smith hereby be commended on the occasion of her 100th birthday; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Ona Estelle Shrader Smith as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for her contributions to the Roanoke community.
