SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 119
Celebrating the life of Haskell S. Bingham, Ph.D.
 
Agreed to by the Senate, February 26, 2015
 

WHEREAS, Haskell S. Bingham, Ph.D., of Petersburg, a retired administrator at Virginia State University and Saint Paul's College, a leader who set an outstanding example for many people, a genealogist and historian of the Binghams of African American descent, and a devoted husband and father, died on October 23, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Haskell Bingham was a native of Vicksburg, Mississippi; he was a graduate of Jackson State College, now Jackson State University, and earned a master's degree from the University of Denver and a doctoral degree from Peabody College, now part of Vanderbilt University; and

WHEREAS, a veteran of the United States Army who served in the Korean War, Dr. Bingham spent his professional career in education; he was a high school teacher in Jackson, Mississippi before becoming assistant vice president of academic affairs and associate professor of education at Jackson State University, where he also served as the school's dean of admissions and records; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bingham moved to Virginia and became provost and vice president of academic affairs at Virginia State University in Petersburg; he later served as special assistant to the president of Saint Paul's College in Lawrenceville; and

WHEREAS, with a strong sense of compassion and dedication to duty, Dr. Bingham's leadership abilities were greatly admired by all who knew him; those traits were evident in his wide-ranging civic involvement and in his efforts to register voters during the civil rights movement; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bingham's abiding interest and passion was researching Bingham ancestors of African American descent, an avocation that he inherited from his father; during his life, Dr. Bingham identified more than 2,500 ancestors; and

WHEREAS, an African man born in 1703 who came to Virginia as a slave was discovered by Dr. Bingham to be his earliest known Virginia ancestor; his research revealed that he was descended from Gabriel Prosser, a noted slave in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, in 1800, Gabriel Prosser was captured and hanged in Richmond for fomenting a slave insurrection, an uprising foiled by severe weather; the historic event became known as Gabriel's Rebellion, and Dr. Bingham helped obtain a symbolic letter of pardon for Gabriel Prosser from Governor Tim Kaine in 2007; and

WHEREAS, Haskell Bingham will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his wife, Robbie; his children, Pamela and Gail, and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Haskell S. Bingham, Ph.D., of Petersburg, a retired administrator at Virginia State University and Saint Paul's College, a leader who set an outstanding example for many people, a genealogist and historian of the Binghams of African American descent, and a devoted husband and father; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Haskell S. Bingham, Ph.D., as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for his memory.
