SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 84
Commending the City of Fairfax Band on the occasion of its 40th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax Band is commended for 40 years of delighting and entertaining audiences with outstanding classical and popular music performances; and

WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax Band brings Northern Virginia the best in symphonic band music every year in a five-concert subscription series, a series of free outdoor summer performances, July 4th celebrations, the annual Fairfax County's "Spotlight on the Arts Festival," and its summer "Braddock Nights" and "Spotlight by Starlight" programs; and

WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax Band works to promote and develop interest in the musical environment, educate the general public, and provide an opportunity for individuals to develop their musical skills and talents; and

WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax Band is especially proud of its contributions of new band music, including the commissioning of a new symphonic work by Virginia composer Mark Camphouse entitled "Foundation," which premiered in 2006; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of Music Director Robert Pouliot since 1994, the City of Fairfax Band has won several honors, including national recognition with the prestigious Sudler Silver Scroll award from the John Philip Sousa Foundation and a Special Recognition Award for outstanding community service from the Virginia Commission for the Arts; and

WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax Band will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a festive concert at George Mason University's Center for the Arts in June of 2010 that will benefit the Alzheimer's Association; and

WHEREAS, the City of Fairfax Band is an integral part of the cultural and artistic fabric of the Northern Virginia region; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend the City of Fairfax Band on the occasion of its 40th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the City of Fairfax Band as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and best wishes for the future.
