WHEREAS, Silas Asa Hall, a member of the "Greatest Generation" from Mount Airy, died on September 2, 2010; and WHEREAS, Silas Hall was born in Patrick County on June 20, 1917, to Judie Elizabeth Hall and was the devoted sibling of two sisters, Roxie and Emma Lee, and seven brothers, Thamon, Romey, Mack, Samson, Simon, Saford, and Clayton; and WHEREAS, as a young man growing up in rural Patrick County, Silas Hall and his family heard of the rising hostilities abroad and as World War II broke out, Silas Hall became one of the thousands of brave men who joined the military; and WHEREAS, as a member of the United States Army, Silas Hall was sent to Europe, where he endured the rigors and hardships common to the soldiers at that time as they battled against the foe; and WHEREAS, in December of 1944, Germany launched a huge counter-offensive aimed at splitting the Allied forces and Silas Hall became part of the epic Battle of the Bulge; and WHEREAS, Silas Hall fought bravely alongside his fellow soldiers to hold back the German forces and, on Christmas Day, sustained an injury during battle for which he would later receive a Purple Heart; and WHEREAS, after the war, Silas Hall continued his distinguished military career, retiring after 20 years of meritorious service to his country; and WHEREAS, Silas Hall returned to his beloved Patrick County and actively involved himself in the community, including as a devoted member and Sunday School teacher at the First Baptist Church in Mount Airy; and WHEREAS, a man of strong character, Silas Hall answered his country's call to duty during her hour of need and was one of the many brave Americans whose sacrifices helped the Allied forces claim victory in World War II; and WHEREAS, predeceased by his first wife, Louise Elizabeth Mungo Hall, Silas Hall will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Ruby Robertson Hall; children, Susan, Melba, and Charles, and their families; stepchildren, Mary and Johnny, and their families; and his numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a patriotic citizen of the Commonwealth, Silas Asa Hall; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Silas Asa Hall as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
