SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 370
Celebrating the life of Richard Aubrey Farmar, Jr.

WHEREAS, Richard Aubrey Farmar, Jr., a beloved resident of the Northern Neck who enthusiastically supported numerous community causes, died on February 26, 2009; and

WHEREAS, the son of Richard Aubrey Farmar and Virginia Mullan Farmar, Richard "Dick" Farmar married the love of his life, Katherine Holt, while an undergraduate student; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from the University of Virginia, Dick Farmar returned to Warsaw and the Northern Neck to build a prosperous life dedicated to the service of others; and

WHEREAS, a hardworking businessman, Dick Farmar bought the B.H. Baird Insurance Agency and devoted himself to building a successful business that served the needs of his customers; and

WHEREAS, Dick Farmar served as president of the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce, where he worked to ensure a positive environment for businesses to thrive; and

WHEREAS, Dick Farmar also supported the insurance industry as founder and president of the Independent Insurance Agents of the Northern Neck and as a member of the Agents' Advisory Council of Montgomery Insurance Company, Travelers Insurance Company, and Reliance Insurance Company; and

WHEREAS, a respected leader in the community, Dick Farmar served as the president of numerous local organizations, including the Warsaw-Richmond County Chamber of Commerce, Warsaw Rotary Club, Richmond County Ruritan Club, Rappahannock High School P.T.A., Rappahannock Booster Club, and Northern Neck Assembly; and

WHEREAS, Dick Farmar also cofounded and served as first chairman of the Rappahannock chapter of Ducks Unlimited and served as a board member and vice president of the local hospice and as a board member of the local shelter for abused women; and

WHEREAS, Dick Farmar also devoted his time and energy as foreman of the Northern Neck Multijurisdictional Grand Jury; and

WHEREAS, a man of great faith, Dick Farmar was a longtime member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where he served as vestryman, senior warden, and trustee; and

WHEREAS, in 1973, Dick Farmar was named Richmond County's Outstanding Citizen in recognition of his tireless service to make the local community a great place in which to live and work; and

WHEREAS, Dick Farmar loved the Northern Neck community and environment, particularly the great expanses of land and bodies of water where he could indulge in his favorite pastimes, hunting and fishing; and

WHEREAS, Dick Farmar lived a life devoted to the service of his family and community, leaving behind a sterling legacy that others may emulate; and

WHEREAS, preceded in death by his beloved grandchildren, Joe and Anne Marie, Dick Farmar will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 55 years, Katherine Holt Farmar; children, Katherine, Richard, Ayn, and Elizabeth, and their families, including nine grandchildren; and his numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved resident of the Northern Neck, Richard Aubrey Farmar, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Richard Aubrey Farmar, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
