SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 237 Commending the Grundy High School wrestling team.   Agreed to by the Senate, March 7, 2012 Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 8, 2012  

WHEREAS, the Grundy High School wrestling team won the 2012 Virginia High School League (VHSL) Group A state championship, defeating second-place Manassas Park High School 161.5 to 158.5; and

WHEREAS, it was the first state title in 11 years for the Grundy High School wrestlers, and it was the team's first year competing in VHSL Group A competition; in 2011, the team reached the semifinals of the Group AA tournament; and

WHEREAS, three members of the Golden Wave won individual championships at the 2012 meet: Justin Street, 132-pound weight class; Trey Smith, 138-pound weight class; and Tyler McClanahan, 170-pound weight class; and

WHEREAS, other members of the Grundy High School team also did well at the state tournament; nine of the 10 wrestlers who qualified for the state meet scored points, and eight of them placed; and

WHEREAS, additional top finishers for the Golden Wave are Austin Compton, 120-pound weight class, and Jake McCowan, 220-pound weight class, who both placed second; Kensey Hankins, 195-pound weight class, who achieved a third-place finish; Austin Hurley, 106-pound weight class, who took sixth place; and Channing Elswick, 145-pound weight class, who finished in eighth place; and

WHEREAS, Grundy High School's win was a team effort, led by the expert coaching of Travis Fiser and his staff; the support and enthusiasm of the school community contributed to the team's championship effort; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Grundy High School wrestling team for winning the 2012 Virginia High School League Group A state championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Travis Fiser, head coach of the Grundy High School wrestling team, as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations for an outstanding season.
