WHEREAS, Samuel Earl Newton, a dedicated law-enforcement officer who was one of the original members of the Albemarle County Police Department and a friend to many people in the community, died on January 26, 2016; and WHEREAS, Earl Newton grew up in Scottsville and honorably served his country as a member of the United States Navy during the Vietnam War; in 1983, he began his career in law enforcement as a patrol officer with the newly created Albemarle County Police Department; and WHEREAS, Earl Newton rose through the ranks to become a lieutenant, led the patrol and investigations division, then served as public information officer before his well-earned retirement in 2004; he later worked on a security detail for the federal courthouse in Charlottesville; and WHEREAS, throughout his career, Earl Newton earned respect for his intelligence, generosity, and commitment to both his officers and members of the public; he and his family often prepared a hot meal for officers working on holidays; and WHEREAS, Earl Newton worked to enhance the community as a past master of Scottsville Masonic Lodge No. 45 and a loyal member of Royal Arch Masons, ACCA Shriners, and the Thompson-Hall Lodge No. 5 of the Fraternal Order of Police; and WHEREAS, leaving behind a legacy of excellence to his fellow members of the Albemarle County Police Department, Earl Newton was an exemplar of the compassion, professionalism, and dedication to duty demonstrated by law-enforcement officers throughout the Commonwealth; and WHEREAS, Earl Newton will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 40 years, Gloria; daughters, Heather and Erica, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Samuel Earl Newton, a distinguished law-enforcement officer and an admired member of the Albemarle County community; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Samuel Earl Newton as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
