SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 154
  Commending the Reverend Dr. Harold James Cobb, Jr.

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. Harold James Cobb, Jr., a trusted spiritual leader in Norfolk, retired as the rector of Grace Episcopal Church after 29 years of inspirational service to the community; and

WHEREAS, Harold Cobb previously served as the founding minister of the Good Samaritan Church, in Durham, North Carolina, then joined Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, as rector; and

WHEREAS, in 1995, Harold Cobb relocated to the Commonwealth as the eighth rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Norfolk; and

WHEREAS, striving to enhance the quality of life for all community members, Harold Cobb is active in many business and community endeavors; he has served as chair of the Norfolk International Airport Authority and as a board member of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, Children's Health Systems, Saint Paul's College, and Westminster-Canterbury on the Chesapeake Bay; and

WHEREAS, Harold Cobb currently serves on the board of the Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary in Alexandria, the General Episcopal Theological Seminary in New York City, the Slover Library Foundation, and the Chrysler Museum of Art; and

WHEREAS, Harold Cobb is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades, including the 2013 Humanitarian Award from the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, previously known as the National Conference of Christians and Jews; and

WHEREAS, in 2019, Harold Cobb was nominated as the 11th diocesan bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia, and his historic candidacy marked the first time a Black American was nominated as a bishop of one of the Episcopal dioceses in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Harold Cobb has touched countless lives in Hampton Roads through his wise spiritual counsel and commitment to transformational outreach; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Reverend Dr. Harold James Cobb, Jr., on the occasion of his retirement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Reverend Dr. Harold James Cobb, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his accomplishments and legacy of community service in Hampton Roads.
