SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 109
Celebrating the life of Nelson Greene, Jr.

WHEREAS, Nelson Greene, Jr., an honorable veteran, co-owner and president of Greene Funeral Home in Alexandria, and an active and beloved member of the Alexandria community, died on March 14, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Nelson Greene briefly attended the historic Parker-Gray High School and graduated from what is today the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C., before serving his country with honor and distinction as an officer in the United States Army for three years; and

WHEREAS, Nelson Greene returned home to join the family business, Greene Funeral Home, founded by his father, Nelson, Sr., in 1954, studying mortuary science at what was then John Tyler Community College and earning a bachelor's degree in biology from what was then Virginia State College; and

WHEREAS, at Greene Funeral Home, Nelson Greene worked tirelessly to serve families as they mourned and paid tribute to their loved ones; in 2014, he assumed ownership of the business and continued the tradition of excellence established by his father more than a half-century before; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his accomplishments as a mortician, Nelson Greene held a lifetime designation as a Certified Funeral Service Practitioner from the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice; and

WHEREAS, Nelson Greene made an outsized impact on the funeral industry through leadership positions with the Epsilon Nu Delta Mortuary Fraternity, National Funeral Directors & Morticians Association, and Virginia Morticians Association and as a founding member of the Northern Virginia District of the Virginia Morticians Association; and

WHEREAS, Nelson Greene's contributions to the community included three terms on the Alexandria City School Board and service as president of the Departmental Progressive Club, a social organization in Alexandria that collaborates frequently with local organizations to address the needs of the community; and

WHEREAS, Nelson Greene showed a commitment to nurturing future generations of morticians as an adjunct professor in the mortuary science program at the University of the District of Columbia; and

WHEREAS, guided throughout his life by his faith, Nelson Greene enjoyed worship and fellowship with his community at Meade Memorial Episcopal Church in Alexandria, where he served as a licensed lay preacher and as a junior warden and senior warden on multiple occasions; and

WHEREAS, Nelson Greene will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his loving wife, Donita; his children, Nina, Nelson III, Derrick, and James, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Nelson Greene, Jr., a cherished member of the Alexandria community whose dedication and service touched countless lives; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Nelson Greene, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
