SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 109
Celebrating the life of William Francis Rountree, Jr.

WHEREAS, William Francis Rountree, Jr., a respected banker and admired community supporter from Hampton Roads, died on June 29, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Maury High School, William Rountree received a bachelor's degree from The College of William and Mary and a master's degree from Dartmouth College; and

WHEREAS, William Rountree began his distinguished banking career at United Virginia Bank and gained valuable experience at First & Merchants Bank, Sovran Bank, Nations Bank, and Bank of America; and

WHEREAS, committed to the prosperity of his hometown and its residents, William Rountree founded Monarch Bank, a community bank, on the principles of service, quality, and fiscal responsibility; and

WHEREAS, a remarkable leader, William Rountree believed in picking the right people for the right positions and created a team of loyal and enthusiastic bankers who took great pride in helping local businesses and individuals grow and thrive with the support of essential banking services; and

WHEREAS, William Rountree took an active role in community and civic affairs, serving as chair of the Four Cities United Way, Eastern Virginia Medical School Foundation, Virginia Beach Neptune Festival, and the Virginia Beach Resort Advisory Commission; and

WHEREAS, William Rountree also generously gave of his time and talents as president of Old Dominion University's Educational Foundation and board president of the Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic Foundation; and

WHEREAS, William Rountree earned many awards and accolades for his exceptional service to the community, including induction into the Junior Achievement of Greater Hampton Roads, Inc., Hampton Roads Business Hall of Fame and selection by Horizons Hampton Roads, Inc., as a Roast and Toast Honoree; and

WHEREAS, William Rountree, fondly known as "Tree," possessed a deep and abiding faith that he nurtured at Galilee Episcopal Church and Spring Branch Community Church and a loving family that sustained him during a more than 20-year battle with cancer; and

WHEREAS, William Rountree will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Ginny; sons, Will and Ben; and his numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen of the Commonwealth, William Francis Rountree, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William Francis Rountree, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
