A BILL to direct the Department of Transportation to establish a pilot program regarding right lane restrictions for tractor trucks on Interstate 81.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. §1. That the Department of Transportation (Department) shall conduct a pilot program establishing right lane restrictions for tractor trucks on Interstate 81. The Department shall establish through the pilot program zones where all tractor trucks are restricted to the right lane only. Such restricted zones shall serve as a substitute for the construction of truck climbing lanes. Any such designated zone on Interstate 81 shall be (i) a minimum of three miles long, (ii) on a portion of the highway with an incline lasting at least one mile or in an area with at least five miles between exits, and (iii) clearly indicated by appropriately placed signs displaying the right lane restriction and the penalty for violation.
