HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 89
Commending Charles Larry Pope.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 29, 2016

WHEREAS, Charles Larry Pope retired as president and chief executive officer of Smithfield Foods, Inc., on December 31, 2015, after 35 years of exemplary service to the citizens of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Larry Pope spent most of his career in the business world, having worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of the largest professional services firms in the world, and Smithfield Foods, the largest processor of pork products in the world and purveyor of one of Virginia's signature products, Smithfield hams; and

WHEREAS, Larry Pope served as controller of Smithfield Foods from 1980 to 1999, when he was appointed chief financial officer; and

WHEREAS, in 2001, Larry Pope was appointed president and chief operating officer of Smithfield Foods; and

WHEREAS, in 2006, Larry Pope was appointed president and chief executive officer of Smithfield Foods, where he continued to serve until his retirement at the end of 2015; and

WHEREAS, Larry Pope's leadership and stewardship resulted in remarkable improvements within Smithfield Foods, the Town of Smithfield, and the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, after his well-deserved retirement, Larry Pope plans to spend more time with his family and friends, fully enjoying his role as husband, father, and grandfather; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Charles Larry Pope hereby be commended for his devoted and time-honored service to the citizens of the Commonwealth on the occasion of his retirement as president and chief executive officer of Smithfield Foods, Inc.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Charles Larry Pope as an expression of the House of Delegates' appreciation for his hard work and dedication and best wishes on future endeavors.
