HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 83
Commending the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 25, 2011

WHEREAS, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., a fraternity comprising undergraduate and alumni chapters on major college campuses throughout the country, was established on the campus of Indiana University on January 5, 1911; and

WHEREAS, with a common vision among its organizing members, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., was founded for the purpose of fostering exemplary academic achievement among African American men, encouraging and assisting young African American men to pursue higher education, and promoting unity among these young college-age men through culture, patriotism, and honor in a bond of fraternity; and

WHEREAS, on April 18, 1941, the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter was chartered, and the chapter will celebrate its 70th anniversary on April 18, 2011; and

WHEREAS, consistent with the founding principles of the fraternity, the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter mentors students in the Petersburg area through its "Guide Right Program," which has succeeded in serving thousands of youths in the Southside Virginia region; and

WHEREAS, the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter promotes neighborhood beautification through its "Adopt a Spot/Clean the Streets Program" by consistently mobilizing chapter members and other volunteers to remove debris from Petersburg streets and sidewalks; and

WHEREAS, to support the needs of less fortunate families during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter collaborates with the City of Petersburg Department of Social Services for the "Neighbors Helping Neighbors" Program; and

WHEREAS, the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter is actively involved in community endeavors and has mobilized volunteers of diverse backgrounds, including representatives of the nonprofit sector, the business community, and local and state government, to initiate and support the chapter's annual voter registration drive; and

WHEREAS, the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter has extended its efforts internationally and it has participated in a massive book drive in which hundreds of magazines and periodicals were mailed to members of the United States Armed Forces serving in Iraq and Afghanistan to demonstrate the support of American citizens; and

WHEREAS, working diligently and with commitment over the past 70 years to accomplish its vision, the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter has changed lives and helped provide enhanced and substantial educational, social, and economic opportunities to ensure a better quality of life for the citizens of Petersburg and Southside Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter is committed to providing inspiration and guidance to youth, exceptional community assistance, and professional leadership to the Commonwealth, and particularly to the City of Petersburg and Southside Virginia; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates commend the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Calvin B. LaSmith, Sr., Polemarch of the Petersburg Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., requesting that he further disseminate copies of this resolution to members of the fraternity's alumni chapter, in order that they may be apprised of the House of Delegates' appreciation of the fraternity's outstanding community service and gratitude for its commitment to the people of Petersburg, Southside Virginia, and the Commonwealth.
