HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 68
Commending the S. Delois Mayes Scholarship Foundation.
 
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 5, 2024
 

WHEREAS, the S. Delois Mayes Scholarship Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity supporting the educational ambitions of high school students in Suffolk, commemorates its 10th anniversary in 2023; and

WHEREAS, the S. Delois Mayes Scholarship Foundation was established in 2013 to honor the life and memory of Shontoyia Delois Mayes, an inspirational young woman and graduate of Old Dominion University who tragically lost her life in a car accident in 2002; and

WHEREAS, Shontoyia Delois Mayes' perseverance in the pursuit of her education and desire to help others learn from her experience motivated the founders of the S. Delois Mayes Scholarship Foundation and guides the organization's mission to this day; and

WHEREAS, the S. Delois Mayes Scholarship Foundation offers general scholarships to high school seniors attending one of the three public high schools in Suffolk, contributing greatly to their ability to afford college and pursue their dreams and aspirations; and

WHEREAS, in 2016, the S. Delois Mayes Scholarship Foundation established its Rosie Ellis-Fields Scholarship to annually assist a rising college student from Suffolk with intentions to major in a healthcare field; and

WHEREAS, since its founding, the S. Delois Mayes Scholarship Foundation has gifted more than $100,000 in scholarships to graduates of Suffolk Public Schools, a profound and lasting tribute to the life of Shontoyia Delois Mayes; and

WHEREAS, by unburdening tomorrow's leaders of the financial constraints presented by a college education, the S. Delois Mayes Scholarship Foundation has fostered brighter futures for many young people and made Suffolk a more wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the S. Delois Mayes Scholarship Foundation hereby be commended for its achievements on the occasion of its 10th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the S. Delois Mayes Scholarship Foundation as an expression of the House of Delegates' high regard for its admirable contributions to the success of young people in the Commonwealth.
