WHEREAS, the New Virginia Majority Education Fund was founded in 2007 after nearly 30 years of organizing at the local level in response to the lack of federal comprehensive immigration reform; and
WHEREAS, since its founding, the New Virginia Majority Education Fund has expanded its advocacy efforts to include Latinx, African American, Asian American Pacific Islander, and youth communities, as well as working class women of color; and
WHEREAS, the New Virginia Majority Education Fund recently and most notably strategized, organized, and mobilized with local community leaders to prevent the sale of the Leesburg Mobile Home Park, which would have displaced nearly 75 low-income families; and
WHEREAS, the New Virginia Majority Education Fund advocated on behalf of the residents of the Leesburg Mobile Home Park after recognizing the park as one of the few remaining forms of truly affordable housing for working class individuals and families in the area; and
WHEREAS, the lead organizers of the New Virginia Majority Education Fund, Sofia Saiyed and Isamar Ortega, alongside community leaders Americo Lopez, Genaro Echeverria, Jose Mario Turcios, Cesar Frias, Vicente Gonzalez, Erin Taylor, Cesar Chavez, and Maria Garcia, went above and beyond their call of duty in their efforts to protect the Leesburg Mobile Home Park; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the New Virginia Majority Education Fund hereby be commended for its tenacity and perseverance in raising awareness of the critical issues surrounding the sale of the Leesburg Mobile Home Park; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the New Virginia Majority Education Fund as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the organization's commitment to supporting communities in need.
