Celebrating the life of Jane Huffman.

WHEREAS, Jane Huffman, a champion for education and a beloved member of her community in Fredericksburg, died on March 19, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Jane Huffman was a graduate of Blacksburg High School, Radford University, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; and

WHEREAS, Jane Huffman taught government at John Handley High School in Winchester early in her career and subsequently worked as a professor at University of North Carolina Pembroke, St. Andrews University, and Shaw University; and

WHEREAS, Jane Huffman ultimately settled in the Fredericksburg area and worked at the University of Mary Washington's College of Education for 17 years; she was an innovative leader who sought out new teaching methods to ensure her classes were both engaging and informative; and

WHEREAS, Jane Huffman favored hands-on learning techniques and often used LEGO bricks in her lessons, which led to the creation of the LEGO wall in the makerspace in Seacobeck Hall; and

WHEREAS, in 2018, Jane Huffman received the Graduate Faculty Award, which recognizes an outstanding full-time faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in graduate-level teaching and professional leadership in a graduate program; and

WHEREAS, Jane Huffman provided her expertise to several professional organizations, including the Association of Teacher Educators, and she served as president and executive director of the Virginia Association of Colleges and Teacher Educators; and

WHEREAS, outside of her career, Jane Huffman was an advocate for social justice and democracy who supported the Spotsylvania County Democratic Committee and the Blue Action Network; and

WHEREAS, guided by her passion for history and social studies, Jane Huffman also volunteered at Historic Kenmore and George Washington's Ferry Farm; and

WHEREAS, Jane Huffman will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her brothers, Stan and Frank, and their families, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Jane Huffman; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jane Huffman as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for her memory.
