Commending Norman's Grocery.

WHEREAS, Norman's Grocery, a third-generation family-owned business in the Norman community of Culpeper County, has served travelers and local residents for 130 years; and

WHEREAS, Norman's Grocery was established in 1894 by two Black entrepreneurs, Lewis Henry and Mary Jackson Tutt, with the original building located only a few hundred yards from their family home; the Tutts proudly served people of all races and backgrounds, treating every customer with the same care and respect; and

WHEREAS, after Norman's Grocery was destroyed by a fire in 1908, the Tutts relocated the store to the former Norman Post Office Building on Sperryville Pike, where it has continued to thrive and provide essential services to the community for more than a century; and

WHEREAS, Lewis and Mary Tutt's son, Lewis William Tutt, became the owner and operator of Norman's Grocery in 1949, and his own children later followed in his footsteps; Lewis William Tutt, Jr., managed the business until his death in 2012, at which time, his brother, Reva Tutt, became the owner; and

WHEREAS, throughout its history, Norman's Grocery has cultivated a sense of fellowship in the area and built strong relationships between generations of the same family; and

WHEREAS, at the time of its founding, Norman's Grocery was one of many small businesses that served the rural community known as Norman on the stretch between Sperryville and Culpeper, and the store has endured the region's significant demographic shifts, growth, and change to remain a cherished local meeting place; and

WHEREAS, in 2024, Norman's Grocery was honored by the Museum of Culpeper History through the placement of a roadside historic marker as part of a new program that pays homage to places, people, and events specific to Culpeper; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Norman's Grocery, a local institution in the Norman community of Culpeper County, hereby be commended on the occasion of its 130th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the owners of Norman's Grocery as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the store's legacy of contributions to Culpeper County.
