HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 59
Celebrating the life of Samuel Murray Butler.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 15, 2016

WHEREAS, Samuel Murray Butler of Midland, a dairy farmer, former member of the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors, proud veteran of the United States military, and a devoted husband and father, died on December 22, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Samuel Butler was born in Bealeton and graduated from Bealeton High School; he then faithfully served his country from 1955 to 1959 as a member of the United States Army National Guard; and

WHEREAS, Samuel Butler's roots in Fauquier County run deep and his connections to the people of Fauquier County were extensive; he was reared in a farming family and he spent his career as a dairy farmer and dedicated public servant; and

WHEREAS, in 1971, Samuel Butler won an election to the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors, representing the Lee District; he served four terms and was known for his fiscally conservative approach to government; and

WHEREAS, during Samuel Butler's tenure, Fauquier County underwent tremendous changes and growth; a new circuit court and office building opened in Warrenton, IBM expanded its presence in the county, and Interstate 66 opened in northern Fauquier County; and

WHEREAS, when he first ran for the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors, Samuel Butler recommended that a new high school be built; in 1994, Liberty High School opened in Bealeton—23 years after Samuel Butler proposed a second high school for the county; and

WHEREAS, Samuel Butler, who was predeceased by his wife, Betty Jane, will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his children, Mike and Brenda, and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Samuel Murray Butler of Midland, a dairy farmer, dedicated public servant, veteran of the United States military, and a devoted husband and father; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Samuel Murray Butler as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
