HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 575
Commending J. Knox Singleton.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, May 30, 2018

WHEREAS, J. Knox Singleton, chief executive officer of Inova Health System, the leading nonprofit health care system in the Washington, D.C., region, will retire on July 1, 2018, after 35 years of service; and

WHEREAS, a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina who holds a master's degree from Duke University, Knox Singleton joined Inova Health System in 1983, when it was called the Fairfax Hospital Association, and has helped it grow from a group of small, stand-alone hospitals to a comprehensive, award-winning health system that now serves more than two million people annually; and

WHEREAS, under Knox Singleton's leadership, Inova Health System has earned numerous national accolades for its clinical excellence, commitment to outstanding patient care, and innovative contributions to the medical field, including being named by U.S. News & World Report as one of "America's Best Hospitals" for multiple years; and

WHEREAS, with Knox Singleton's unique emphasis on health promotion and optimization, Inova Health System in 2015 launched the Inova Center for Personalized Health on a new campus in Fairfax County; the center partners with the Commonwealth of Virginia, some of the leading research universities in the Commonwealth, and innovative health care companies, to expand access to cutting-edge genomic screening and assessments; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate servant-leader, Knox Singleton has worked to strengthen communities in the Commonwealth and abroad as a cofounder of The Global Good Fund, which provides mentorship and support to future leaders; as a cofounder and president of the Community Coalition for Haiti, which promotes health care, education, and development solutions in Haiti; and as a Ruling Elder of Vienna Presbyterian Church; and

WHEREAS, Knox Singleton has served in numerous civic and business leadership roles, including as member of the board of visitors of George Mason University, chair of Washington Mutual Investors Fund, Inc., director of Virginia Tax Exempt Fund, director of Healthcare Realty Trust, Inc., and director of JPMorgan Value Opportunities Fund, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, Knox Singleton has received numerous awards and accolades for his personal and professional achievements, including the Citizen of the Year award from The Washington Post in 1990, the Community Care Award for Health from the Northern Virginia Community Foundation in 1993, the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Washington Chapter of the American Jewish Committee in 2000, the Regent's Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives in 2000, the Governor's Award from Governor Mark R. Warner in 2004, the Washington Business Hall of Fame from the Washingtonian magazine, Greater Washington Board of Trade and Junior Achievement of the National Capital Area in 2009, the CEO of the Year award from Washington Business Journal in 2015, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce in 2016; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That J. Knox Singleton hereby be commended for his exceptional leadership of Inova Health System on the occasion of his retirement as chief executive officer in 2018; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to J. Knox Singleton as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for his contributions to the health and wellness of Northern Virginia residents.
