HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 43 Celebrating the life of John Amos Stillwell.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 15, 2016

WHEREAS, John Amos Stillwell, a respected educator and school administrator who dedicated his life to serving and inspiring others, died on February 27, 2015; and

WHEREAS, a native of Quincy, Illinois, John Stillwell graduated from Woodberry Forest School in Madison County in 1944, earning his diploma early to serve his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II; and

WHEREAS, John Stillwell earned a bachelor's degree from Williams College, where he was a multi-sport athlete, class president, and a member of the honor committee; he was recalled to military service during the Korean War and later earned a master's degree from the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, in 1957, John Stillwell began a long and fulfilling career as a teacher, coach, admissions director, academic dean, and assistant headmaster of Woodberry Forest School; he touched countless lives over the course of his 30-year tenure; and

WHEREAS, John Stillwell also imparted his passion for lifelong learning to students at Tandem Friends School and Saint Anne's-Belfield School, and he served as a trustee for Woodberry Forest School, Saint Anne's-Belfield School, and Grymes Memorial School; and

WHEREAS, the recipient of many awards and accolades for his good work, John Stillwell earned the Distinguished Service Award and the J. Carter Walker Award from Woodberry Forest School; and

WHEREAS, John Stillwell will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of nearly 60 years, Grace; sons, Richard, John, and Charles, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of John Amos Stillwell, an accomplished educator and school administrator; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John Amos Stillwell as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
