WHEREAS, Sherry King, the principal of High Point Elementary School in Bristol, was honored for her commitment to quality elementary school education with selection as the 2013 Virginia National Distinguished Principal; and WHEREAS, the National Distinguished Principal Program honors elementary and middle level school principals from across the nation who set "high standards . . . in their learning communities"; and WHEREAS, Sherry King, the principal of High Point Elementary School since 2012, was nominated for the award based on her work as principal of Greendale Elementary School in Abingdon; and WHEREAS, dedicated to excellence, Sherry King worked with teachers and staff to create an environment in which students could thrive; and WHEREAS, a passionate advocate for children, Sherry King strove to ensure that 100 percent of students read at their grade level by third grade and lessened the academic gap; and WHEREAS, Sherry King learned of her selection as the winner of the prestigious award at a special assembly at High Point Elementary School, where she was surprised with the news; and WHEREAS, students, teachers, faculty, family members, school administration officials, and members of the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals at the special assembly congratulated Sherry King on the honor and on her work with students; and WHEREAS, Sherry King was also recognized at the National Association of Elementary School Principals conference for her contributions to student learning; and WHEREAS, an exemplary role model and gifted leader, Sherry King has made a difference in the lives of countless students as she has encouraged them to reach their potential; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Sherry King hereby be commended on being selected as the 2013 Virginia National Distinguished Principal; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sherry King as an expression of the House of Delegates' congratulations and admiration for her dedication to the children of Washington County. |
