HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 282
Celebrating the life of Carlton Haywood, Jr.
 
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 5, 2024
 

WHEREAS, Carlton Haywood, Jr., an accomplished scholar and professor at Johns Hopkins University and a renowned advocate for patients with sickle cell disease, died on December 31, 2021; and

WHEREAS, despite the challenges he faced after being diagnosed with sickle cell disease at the age of three, Carlton "CJ" Haywood, Jr., graduated with honors from William Byrd High School in Vinton, Virginia, and earned a bachelor's degree in religious studies and a master's degree in bioethics from the University of Virginia in 1999 and 2003, respectively; and

WHEREAS, inspired by his own experiences, Carlton Haywood dedicated himself to becoming an advocate for people living with sickle cell disease and went on to earn a doctoral degree in bioethics and health policy from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health; and

WHEREAS, Carlton Haywood advanced in academia to become an assistant professor in the Division of Hematology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and core faculty at the institution's Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology, and Clinical Research and its Berman Institute of Bioethics; and

WHEREAS, Carlton Haywood's research focused on articulating African American perspectives in bioethics and explored how trust and the relationship between members of the African American community and the medical establishment factor into the treatment and management of sickle cell disease; and

WHEREAS, as a medical researcher living with sickle cell disease, Carlton Haywood was a respected voice in both academic and patient communities, and he generously shared his expertise at plenary sessions and research meetings, served on many federal and national advisory committees for various sickle cell disease-based initiatives, and authored numerous research-based articles published in leading medical journals; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his accomplishments, Carlton Haywood was featured by Ebony Magazine on its Power 100 list, which honors the most influential and inspiring men and women in the African American community, in 2014; he was also inducted into the Alpha Chapter of the Delta Omega Public Health Honorary Society at Johns Hopkins University; and

WHEREAS, guided by his deep and abiding faith, Carlton Haywood was born again when he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized at Priest Lake in Nashville, Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, Carlton Haywood is fondly remembered and dearly missed by his parents, Carlton, Sr., and Harriett; his siblings, Tamara, Akiah, and Atu; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Carlton Haywood, Jr., a distinguished bioethics scholar and advocate whose work made a profound and lasting impact on countless lives; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Carlton Haywood, Jr., as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
