WHEREAS, the Honorable Dr. Dwight Clinton Jones, a visionary faith leader and esteemed public servant, has served as the Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church of South Richmond for the past 50 years; and
WHEREAS, Dwight Jones holds a bachelor's degree and master of divinity degree from Virginia Union University and a doctoral degree from United Theological Seminary; and
WHEREAS, a diligent advocate for the economic empowerment of underserved communities, Dwight Jones has worked tirelessly at both the local and state level for the benefit of others; and
WHEREAS, Dwight Jones' legacy as a community leader includes the founding of the South Richmond Adult Day Care Center, the First Baptist Church Child Care Center, and the Imani Intergenerational Community Development Corporation, a major initiative in the Blackwell neighborhood of South Richmond that has greatly helped to revitalize the area; and
WHEREAS, as a testament to Dwight Jones' abilities as a faith leader, the First Baptist Church of South Richmond has expanded to a second worship site in Chesterfield County, drawing new individuals and families into the congregation; and
WHEREAS, Dwight Jones began his illustrious career of public service with an appointment to the Richmond City School Board in 1979, and he served as the school board's chair from 1982 to 1985; and
WHEREAS, Dwight Jones was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates and proudly and ably served his constituents in what was then the 70th District from 1994 to 2008, while also serving for some time as chair of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus; and
WHEREAS, Dwight Jones subsequently served two terms as mayor of the City of Richmond from 2009 through 2016, during which time he advanced efforts to lay a strong foundation for a well-managed government, promote economic growth, build a strong transportation system, create a sustainable and natural environment, and reduce the city's poverty rate; and
WHEREAS, as a faith leader and public servant, Dwight Jones has made significant strides and accomplishments at his church, in his immediate community, and throughout the City of Richmond and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Honorable Dr. Dwight Clinton Jones hereby be commended on the occasion of his 50th anniversary as Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church of South Richmond; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Honorable Dr. Dwight Clinton Jones as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for his contributions to both Richmond and the Commonwealth.
