HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 205
Commending Camp HOPE Norfolk.
 
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 4, 2024
 

WHEREAS, Camp HOPE Norfolk, an overnight, weeklong camping and mentoring program organized by the Norfolk Sheriff's Office and the Norfolk Family Justice Center, provides care and support for child and teenage survivors of primary and secondary trauma; and

WHEREAS, adolescents who witness domestic violence are at an increased risk of drug or alcohol abuse, truancy, declining grades and oppositional or rebellious behavior; studies show these children are at an increased risk for anxiety, depression, and a propensity to perpetuate the cycle of domestic violence; and

WHEREAS, Camp HOPE Norfolk provides trauma-informed care for children and teens who have experienced domestic violence, creating an environment where youths can feel safe, seen, heard, encouraged and cared for; the program strives to cultivate healing and give participants the tools they need to break generational cycles of domestic violence; and

WHEREAS, Camp HOPE Norfolk is based on Camp HOPE America programs around the country; it is the only such camp organized by a sheriff's office and the first camp of its kind in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Camp HOPE Norfolk has assisted dozens of children in their recovery process, utilizing deputies, therapists, counselors, and other resources to help build hope, resiliency, and a sense of empowerment; and

WHEREAS, in addition to its accredited, evidence-based summer camp, located at YMCA Camp Silver Beach in Jamesville, Camp HOPE Norfolk offers engagement and mentoring programs to ensure that young people receive support year round; and

WHEREAS, the healthy bonds and long-term friendships established at Camp HOPE Norfolk have helped participants to overcome adversity and given them a strong foundation to become a positive influence in their communities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Camp HOPE Norfolk hereby be commended for making a difference in the lives of children and teenagers who have experienced domestic violence by creating opportunities for healing and building hope for the future; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to the Norfolk Sheriff's Office and the Norfolk Family Justice Center as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for Camp HOPE Norfolk's vital contributions to young people in Norfolk.
