HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 20
Commending Marisa Pappas.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 15, 2016

WHEREAS, Marisa Pappas, an art teacher at Warrenton Middle School, was named Middle Division Art Educator of the Year for 2015 by the Virginia Art Education Association; and

WHEREAS, Marisa Pappas is committed to art education and promoting the arts throughout the community; she helped organize and coordinate the Fauquier County Youth Art Month Art Walk on Main Street in Warrenton; and

WHEREAS, in 2012, Marisa Pappas began sponsoring an after-school art club at Warrenton Middle School, and in 2013 she helped found the National Junior Art Honor Society at the school; members of the society volunteer to teach art to pre-kindergarten pupils; and

WHEREAS, in addition to her work with young artists and her efforts to ensure that art remains a vital part of Fauquier County's cultural life, Marisa Pappas is involved in statewide art education instructional strategies; and

WHEREAS, Marisa Pappas willingly shares her knowledge and expertise at state and national conferences; locally, she is a mentor for new teachers and is a strong supporter of the Fauquier County Public Schools' art education program; and

WHEREAS, Marisa Pappas was nominated for the award by her colleagues in the Fauquier County Public School division; she is active in the school system, always looking for ways to support the county's art program; and

WHEREAS, before becoming an art teacher at Warrenton Middle School, Marisa Pappas was a fashion design technical consultant, quality control manager, and patternmaker; she also taught fashion design at Endicott College and was an elementary school art educator; and

WHEREAS, Marisa Pappas earned a bachelor's degree from Massachusetts College of Art and a master's degree from George Mason University; she also has certificates in design from the Paris Fashion Institute in France and the University of Massachusetts; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Marisa Pappas, an art teacher at Warrenton Middle School, hereby be commended for being named the 2015 Middle Division Art Educator of the Year by the Virginia Art Education Association; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Marisa Pappas as an expression of the House of Delegates' congratulations and admiration for her enthusiastic support of arts education in Fauquier County and the Commonwealth.
